FIFA  2018: Leroy Sane promises to ‘bounce back stronger’ after Germany squad omission

Leroy Sane has expressed his disappointment at being overlooked for Germany’s 23-man World Cup squad but has promised to “give it my all to bounce back stronger” after the surprise setback.
The 22-year-old, who this season was named PFA Young Player of the Year, scored 10 goals and provided 15 assists for Manchester City as they cruised to the Premier League title as well as the Carabao Cup, but Germany manager Joachim Löw opted for Bayer Leverkusen’s Julian Brandt ahead of the City man.
Sane’s omission comes as a major shock given that both Marco Reus and Mario Gomez feature, with the former suffering heavily from injuries in recent years after missing both the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016 and the latter putting in an underwhelming season with Stuttgart.
Arsenal’s Mesut Özil is also included despite a below-par campaign with Arsenal, who finished sixth in the Premier League and failed to win any silverware that led to the departure of manager Arsene Wenger.
It was a tight race between Leroy Sané and Julian Brandt. Both have big qualities, both are good in the one-on-one duels. Julian Brandt was at the Confed Cup, had some strong games there, and put in good shifts in the training camp too. Leroy Sané is a huge talent, no doubt, and he will be back with the team in September.
Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer makes the cut after making his return to the national team in the weekend’s 2-1 defeat by Austria, having been sidelined since September after breaking a bone in his foot, and the captain set to remain as the first-choice No 1 ahead of Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Kevin Trapp of Paris Saint-Germain.
There were places for Sané’s City team-mate Ilkay Gündogan, Arsenal’s Mesut Özil and Chelsea’s Antonio Rüdiger, as well as the goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who has been appointed team captain despite his long recovery from injury. Germany begin their World Cup finals campaign against Mexico on 17 June and also face Sweden and South Korea in Group F.

Liverpool have a selection dilemma ahead of the visit of Stoke, with only three fit senior midfielders available.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was the latest to have his season ended after he sustained knee ligament damage in the midweek win over Roma. That could lead to an opening for youngster Ben Woodburn to feature alongside Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Forward Sadio Mane is unlikely to be risked after he was pictured visiting a private hospital on Thursday, although Klopp insisted the Senegal international’s problem was not serious.

Provisional squad: Karius, Gomez, Klavan, Van Dijk, Moreno, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Woodburn, Salah, Ings, Firmino, Mignolet, Alexander-Arnold, Clyne, Lovren, Robertson, Milner, Jones, Kane, Solanke.

Liverpool  Dejan Lovren, James Milner and Andrew Robertson drop to the bench; no risks are taken with Sadio Mané; and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is of course sadly injured. In come Joe Gomez, Ragnar Klavan, Alberto Moreno, Georginio Wijnaldum and Danny Ings. That man Mo Salah therefore continues his bid to become 2017-18’s leading Premier League scorer.

Stoke City  Just the one change from the side that drew with Burnley last week. Kurt Zouma comes in for the injured Glen Johnson, who is denied a run-out at his old place of work.

The match will be televised live on Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Main Event, with coverage starting from 11.30am. Sky Sports subscribers will be able to stream the match online via SkyGo and the SkyGo app.

Chelsea host Brighton at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day and, depending on results elsewhere, the Blues can potentially go level with Manchester United with a win.Image result for chelsea images 2017

Antonio Conte’s side are just three points behind the Red Devils and they will hope to keep the pressure on throughout the busy winter period.

The Blues are currently on a four-match unbeaten streak and, while they were frustrated against Everton in their last outing, they will be confident of collecting maximum points at home.

Chelsea were held to a scoreless draw away to Everton on Saturday, which meant that they did not take advantage of Manchester United’s failure to beat Leicester on the same day.

However, Conte expressed satisfaction with his players in the aftermath of the game, suggesting that, while they did not collect all three points, they showed plenty of fighting spirit.

They will need to continue demonstrating that will to win as they push the Red Devils for second place and attempt to ensure their place in the top four come the end of the season.
